This project’s big idea –language e-learning– comes from DecisionMapper. I worked on this project during my internship at DecisionMapper.
Aim
Our aim is to build an effective and fun platform for language learners by combining gamification elements and crowdsourcing method.
Solution
By designing an online platform to allow language learners to learn with joy and help from each other. The platform includes three core features:
- Karaoke (learning can be fun)
- Language war (competitive learning)
- Linguawiki(cooperative learning)
Research methods
Secondary research
One-week research has been conducted to get to know more about language e-learning. Main focus includes language learning platforms, advantages and issues.
Competitive analysis
A competitive analysis among 12 language learning online platforms has been conducted, in order to find out potential market opportunities and design insights. I combined Alexa data, user reviews and Excel to help analyze detailed elements and find out what are the more popular features and what are redundant features.
Requirements gathered from boss and engineers
This is a real-life project, which means there would be more limitations from the company itself and I could not be as idealistic as I want. I presented to the team and gathered more requirements in budget and technology areas.
Then, what we want to focus on?
There are many good features that we can add. But we want to keep it more simple and unique.
- learning a language can be fun like learning a song
- learn in both competition and cooperation

When you log in, you can see four main sections:

Each section includes small functions to allow you practice with fun and take you time! They allow you practice by yourself or with friends which can attract different type of learner. Linguawiki is a young idea. We don’t have enough resource so we want users’ help to keep language materials up-to-date and more authentic. It can also raise activeness and user loyalty.
Note:This project is still being developed. More research results and mock up design cannot be shared at this time due to Non-disclosure agreement. And there will be more iterations based on limitations and usability test results. Stay tuned!
